The most common form of using photography is in printed form. While social media and other on line galleries are certainly prevalent, who doesn't have some printed pictures around? With that in mind, here are some thoughts on prints and printing.
For metal, canvas, glass, and acrylic, prints are all custom. Cost is generally calculated per square inch. Thus, a landscape can be printed in a wide format without unreasonable costs.
Sizes: While prints can be made in most any size, the common sizes for wall art are:
These are common sizes, and frames are readily available for these sizes. Frames can be ordered from many vendors for any size of photo, but the common size frames are considerably cheaper than a custom frame.
For framing, an appropriate matte significantly improves the presentation of the photograph. Mattes for popular sizes are commonly availble, and mattes can also be ordered.
It is important to note that the different sizes require different cropping. Modern cameras natively record photographs in 4" by 6" proportions. A popular size is 8" by 10", but the ratio of the photo is different:

Many of the prints we have on our walls are custom size, particularly panoramic. While framing these prints is more expensive, we like the wider perspective. Square prints are also popular, but again, custom framing (read: expensive) is required.
